Brendan Murphy: Art as a Conduit for Positive Energy
Brendan Murphy is a self-taught painter and sculptor who uses art as a means to project positive energy into society. Before dedicating himself fully to his artistry after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Murphy had a multifaceted career as a professional basketball player and a Wall Street trader. Without formal art education, he relied on the guidance of his friends and renowned New York artists Eric Fischl, David Salle, and Ross Bleckner, who encouraged him to experiment and emphasize the artistic process.
Murphy imbues his paintings and sculptures with symbols, words, figures, and analogies that invite the viewer to be consciously present in the moment and reflect on various aspects of the human experience. He is particularly known for his chalkboard paintings and his iconic astronaut sculptures, which are often covered with a rich layering of text and drawings. As Murphy himself states: "My work contains an enormous number of elements, requiring people to take their time to observe and discover everything that lies before them. I want the viewer to feel inspired and more connected to their emotions. I hope my work encourages people to embrace the unknown."
Murphy works from his two studios in Malibu and Brooklyn. His work is part of over 500 private collections and is exhibited in museums, galleries, and art fairs across the United States and worldwide.
